Five teams from Trail Life Troop AL-0236 competed in An Amazing Hike – Smith Mountain Edition.
An Amazing Hike combines hiking with features similar to those of the television series “An Amazing Race.” Participants completed various challenges and tasks during the course of the hike to accumulate points for their team.
Smith Mountain is located near Dadeville, AL. The hike started with a steep climb to the Smith Mountain Firetower, and then up the 90 ft. Aermotor Model LS-40 tower. The tower provided spectacular views of Lake Martin and the surrounding area. Teams followed clues to signs that provided historical and ecological information about the surrounding area. Exhibits included information about the wildlife, forestry, geology and soils, area mining history, turpentine industry, astronomy, weather and climate, the cultural landscape from the pre-Columbian period to the present, and more. The next stage involved navigating the correct trails and following clues to locate landmarks.
The Pink Coyote’s were the overall winner by points and The Wet Cardboard Patrol had the fastest finish time.
