FAQs About Registered Adults

Trail Life Registered Adults are the adult members of the Trail Life USA part of  Troop 236.

A Registered Adult may be counted as part of our two-deep adult policy and may, but is not required to, take on other leadership roles in the Troop. The national process requires agreement with the Trail Life Statement of Faith, payment of the national Trail Life national membership fee, passing a background check, and completing Youth Protection Training. Our church will routinely perform additional steps as needed, including soliciting a ministry volunteer application and conducting its own background check.

What is the Trail Life USA Statement of Faith?

We believe there is One Triune God – God the Father; Jesus Christ, His one and only Son; and the Holy Spirit – Creator of the universe and eternally existent. We believe the Holy Scriptures (Old and New Testaments) to be the inspired and authoritative Word of God. We believe each person is created in His image for the purpose of communing with and worshiping God. We believe in the ministry of the Holy Spirit, Who enables us to live godly lives. We believe each of us is called to love the Lord our God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. We believe God calls us to lives of purity, service, stewardship and integrity.

Is a Registered Adult the same thing as a troop volunteer?

Not necessarily. Registration is part of a vetting process. There are some volunteer opportunities that do not require being a registered adult, and some outings might require adults to be registered merely for attendance purposes.

What are the responsibilities of a Registered Adult?

A Registered Adult joins the ranks of adults sharing responsibility for youth protection. A Registered Adult must be familiar with the basic policy rules of the Youth Protection Policy, and work actively to avoid things such as improper one-on-one contact. Furthermore, we expect Registered Adults to exhibit a shared commitment to service–to help when their time and gifts would permit them to do so.

What else may a Registered Adult do?

Registered Adults often assist Trail Guides in maintaining order in patrol meetings, take up small projects on behalf of the committee, instruct on specific items of personal expertise, and in general help out where needed.

May a Registered Adult wear a uniform?

Registered Adults are permitted to wear any TLUSA uniform under Trail Life policies. In our Troop setting, we encourage Registered Adults to only wear class A uniform when they are actively serving. Registered Adult are always encouraged to wear their TLUSA lanyard when on-site for a meeting or event.

What is the difference between a Registered Adult and a Trail Guide?

A single patrol may have multiple Trail Guides and Registered Adults doing different things at any point in time. As a general rule, a Trail Guide has one or more particular duties for the patrol he is individually accountable for completing. A Trail Guide is considered a volunteer leader.

How does a Registered Adult transition to a more specific volunteer or leadership role?

Submit a talent survey here. A Troop Committee member will contact you to discuss your interest and answer questions. Positions within the Troop are nominated by the Troop Committee and appointed by the Troop Ministry Liaison.
